Will putting an architect, landscape architect and a planner each with a somewhat different approach and focus on design and strong opinions on the same team lead to the making of a masterpiece? Or is it a recipe for disaster? Well this is what the annual Vortex competition held at the architecture school seeks to find out every year.
Every student I interviewed had a different opinion on what it felt like to work with another person from a different discipline. Some thought it brought a great balance to the group where each person’s opinion was highly valued and everyone was willing to go out of their comfort zones. The architecture students in on group talked about how one of the landscape architecture students brought a form of realism to their design and was the anchor to their group. Bringing together different disciplines is a great idea because it gives a better view into what other disciplines are about and prepares students for the real world.
